ROME - The Mediterranean region has never been so dangerous, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Hassan Shoukry said on Friday.

"The events of the last seven years, during which the institutions and governments have been targeted, have increased the threats for this region, in particular the threats of terrorism and extremism; these have undermined peaceful coexistence in the area, which is at its most dangerous," Shoukry told Med Dialogues in Rome.

"Precisely because we are facing this situation more effort needs to be made to alter these dynamics and cooperate to restore the strategic balance that has been lost over the last few years and coexistence," he continued. The defeat of ISIS in Syria and Iraq has caused combatants to flee to Africa, where they have created camps in sub-Saharan Africa and are "now threatening Egypt and brother African countries".

Terrorism requires military response and international community's support

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Hassan Shoukry on Friday described the "recent attack that caused the death of 311 Egyptian citizens at prayer" on the Sinai Peninsula as "barbaric and unacceptable" and said terrorism can only be tackled using military force "with the help of the international community and Mediterranean countries".

Terrorism is a "danger that must be tackled with necessary force and with the same determination used to tackle ISIS in Iraq," he told Med Dialogues in Rome. To do this it is necessary to "boost the determination of the international community to assist Egypt", also through intelligence and "coordination with strategic partners in the region", Shoukry said.
