(ANSAmed) - CAIRO, JANUARY 12 - Former Egyptian military chief of staff Sami Anan will run for president in elections to be held in Egypt at the end of March, his party has said. Anan is expected to run against President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi, whose candidature is considered certain.

Anan's candidature was announced on Thursday night by his party, Mirs El-Oroba, the online edition of Al Arabiya reports.

General Sami Hafez Anan, 70, headed the Egyptian armed forced from 2005 until the year after the fall of ex-president Hosni Mubarak in 2011.

Sisi has not officially announced his candidature in the election. The first round of the vote is expected to be held on March 26-28. A reported 514 MPs out of a total of 567 have signed a document to back a new mandate.

No candidate with a chance to challenge the president has so far emerged amid withdrawn candidatures, the lack of notoriety of some rivals and legal problems. (ANSAmed).
