Tunisia: minister, calm restored across country

In total 778 arrests, including 16 suspected Islamic extremists

(ANSAmed) - TUNIS, JANUARY 12 - Tunisian security forces have restored calm across the national territory starting from last night, interior ministry spokesman Khalifa Chibani said Friday morning. Chibani said that a total of 778 people have been arrested in clashes over the past few nights between young demonstrators and police.

Sixteen suspected Islamic extremists were among those detained, he said. Several officers were reportedly wounded and police vehicles damaged in the clashes.

Chibani stressed that violent protests over the past few days have nothing to do with legitimate demonstrations against the rising cost of life and price hikes, defining them rather as acts of vandalism, attempts to loot and damage public and private properties by violent groups. (ANSAmed)
