Alfano says Syrian regime feeding escalation of violence

'Creating conditions for terrorism to continue to flourish'

(ANSAmed) - KUWAIT CITY, FEBRUARY 13 - Italian Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano, speaking at the ministerial summit of the anti-ISIS coalition in Kuwait City, said Italy has recently seen an "escalation of violence and a deteriorated humanitarian crisis" in Syria that he said is "fed by the regime".

"The repeated brutality, the sieges, the bombings on civilians and new reports on the use of chemical weapons, create conditions for terrorism to continue to flourish," Alfano said.

"Italy supports the efforts of Staffan De Mistura for the start of a constitutional process and elections under the supervision of the UN," he said.

"Stability and peace can't come without an authentic political transition based on the UN-backed Geneva process," Alfano said.

"I want to be very clear on this: we can't start reconstruction in Syria before the transition has started, and until all the political sides accept their own responsibility for improving the situation and accepting the help of the United Nations," he said.(ANSAmed).
