Greece’s Papadimitriou steps down amid rent scandal

Wife slammed for taking subsidy despite personal wealth

(ANSAmed) -ROME - Greek Minister of the Economy Dimitris Papadimitriou handed in his resignation on Monday after his wife Rania Antonopoulou stepped down as deputy minister for social solidarity in the wake of outrage over reports she had claimed a legal rent allowance on her flat in Athens despite extensive personal wealth. Daily newspaper Eleftheros Typos reported that Antonopoulou had received 23,000 euros in state subsidies for her flat in the upmarket Kolonaki neighbourhood over the course of two years, sparking criticism from the opposition that she should have claimed an allowance intended for the poor in a country still affected by a deep economic crisis.

The former junior minister has said she will return the funds. Papadimitriou handed in his resignation to Premier Alexis Tsipras on Monday evening "for reasons of political sensibility".

The resignations follow on from that of deputy education minister Costas Zouraris in January. Political commentators say they could pave the way for a cabinet reshuffle.
