Palestinian president agrees to Hamas-Israel ceasefire

Al-Hayat says Egyptian president gave details of accord

(ANSAmed) - TEL AVIV, NOVEMBER 8 - Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, has accepted a long-term ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel that Egypt and the UN have been working on for some time, a Palestinian source told the London-based Arabic daily Al-Hayat.

It reported that Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al Sisi, in his meeting with Abbas earlier this week in Sharm el-Sheikh, informed him on the contents of the agreement between Israel and Hamas, as well as attempts to revive the Palestinian reconciliation agreement, which has been stalled for some time.

Abbas, who was kept out of the negotiations, has incurred economic consequences in Gaza over his long opposition to the agreement over fears that it would strengthen Hamas' power in Gaza and keep the Palestinian National Authority out.

The Palestinian source told Al-Hayat that Abbas agreed in order to give the people of Gaza "a chance to breathe".(ANSAmed).
