Spain: solemn ceremony for 40 years of Constitution

Three generations of monarchy in Parliament, clashes in Girona

    (ANSAmed) - MADRID, DECEMBER 6 - The solemn ceremony for the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the democratic Constitution at midday on Thursday saw the presence in the Spanish Parliament of three generations of the monarchy. King Felipe VI and his wife Letitia, together with former monarchs Juan Carlos I and Sofia of Greece and the heir to the throne Leonor with her sister Sofia, who were received by Premier Pedro Sanchez. They were applauded by MPs, except for members of Podemos, who expressed their dissent in this way.

    The ceremony was attended by the three living fathers of the 1978 Constitution, Jospep Pedro Perez-Llorca, Miquel Roca and Miguel Herrero y Rodriguez de Mion; four ex-premiers, Felipe Gonzalez, José Maria Aznar, José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and Mariano Rajoy. ''Today, the nation with the king at its helm celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Constitution'', said the Chamber's speaker, Ana Pastor.

    ''We must congratulate on the fact that, after years of disputes, we found a common project. We must congratulate that it is in place'', she added. She expressed ''respect, gratitude and affection'' to the monarchs for their ''many years of service and devotion to the nation''.

    At the same time in Girona, Catalonia, the mossos d'Esquadra had to disperse anti-fascist demonstrators who wanted to occupy plaza 1 d'Octubre. A demonstration in defense of the Constitution was scheduled at 1:30 pm local time, promoted by the association Borbonia, with the support of far-right party Vox, Catalonia's Partido Popular and the Plataforma per Catalunya.
