MADRID - European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides presented the European Solidarity Corps on Monday, during the 3rd meeting of national civil protection general directors of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) member states, said UfM sources.

The two-day meeting is taking place Monday and Tuesday in Barcelona.

The European Solidarity Corps is an initiative that allows young people between the ages of 18 and 30 to participate in solidarity activities in various fields throughout the European Union.

The meeting, jointly organised by UfM and the EU, opened with a report from Stylianides; followed by a speech by Yousef Bataineh, the Jordanian ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg, the EU and NATO; and Secretary General of the UfM, Nasser Kamel.

The meeting aims at facilitating exchange and cooperation in the field of humanitarian aid and in the shared challenges of crisis management. The frequency and intensity of disasters, which have increased on a global scale in the last decade, is also hitting the Mediterranean region and is putting significant pressure on national authorities, with an increasing number of victims as well as economic and environmental losses.

These factors gave rise to the need for cooperation between UfM member states to share information and a coordinated, shared approach, which has been shown to be more efficient, in managing the risk of catastrophes.
