(ANSAmed) - ISTANBUL, FEBRUARY 21 - The spokesperson for Turkey's foreign ministry issued a statement on Thursday calling the "request for a total suspension of our EU accession talks unacceptable".

The statement referred to a vote on Wednesday in which the European Parliament's foreign committee called on the European Commission and member states to formally suspend EU accession talks with Turkey for violations of the rule of law, human rights, and democracy.

The foreign ministry statement said, "We expect that the final report approved by the European Parliament General Assembly in March will be more realistic" than the one issued thus far by the Dutch rapporteur Kati Piri.

"The accession process is in the interests of both Turkey and the EU," it said.(ANSAmed).
