MADRID - The remains of Spanish dictator Francisco Franco, currently buried at Valle de los Caidos, will be exhumed on June 10 and transferred to a cemetery in Madrid, said Spanish Deputy Prime Minister Carmen Calvo on Friday.

Franco's remains will be buried with those of his wife, Carmen Polo, in the Mingorrubio Cemetery in the Pardo neighbourhood on the outskirts of Madrid.

The Spanish government of Pedro Sanchez approved the exhumation last summer, but the decision met opposition from Franco's family.

Franco's grandchildren had wanted to bury the remains in the Almudena Cathedral in the centre of Madrid, but the executive branch denied permission.

Calvo said the denial was due to reasons of "public order" and said the burial ceremony in Pardo will take place without any images of the dictator displayed.
