Essebsi's son elected president of Nidaa Tounes party

Party concludes convention in Monastir

(ANSAmed) - TUNIS, APRIL 15 - Mohamed Hafedh Caid Essebsi, son of Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi, is the new president of the central committee of the modernist party Nidaa Tounes, following elections at the party's convention in Monastir. The convention took place amidst tensions and divisions that confirm the crisis in the party that garnered the biggest consensus in the 2014 legislative elections.

The meeting of party "rivals" in Monastir also elected Hammamet Sofiene Toubel, president of the Nidaa Tounes group in parliament, to head a "parallel" central committee.

During the convention it emerged that the current Tunisian president will not run in the next presidential elections.

The government coalition party Nidaa Tounes has been experiencing a deep crisis for years that has caused schisms, loss of MPs, and loss of consensus in general.

Relations are particularly difficult between the current prime minister, Youssef Chahed, and Hafedh Caid Essebsi, the Tunisian president's son as well as executive director of Nidaa Tounes. The party's executive committee, recognising Chahed's position, decided in September to suspend the prime minister's membership in the party.

The convention in Monastir revoked the suspension upon Essebi's request, but Chahed is now already involved in and backed by the party Tahya Tounes.(ANSAmed).
