ROME - There has been no official US request for Italy to send a military contingent to Syria, Foreign Minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi said Tuesday. He said any further Italian commitment in the area would have to be "verified and discussed".
Moavero was answering a question from ANSA about a report in Tuesday's Fatto Qutidiano newspaper.
"This has already been spoken about on various occasions in the media," Moavero said.
"A member of the US Senate spoke about it in an interview during a visit a few months ago, but we never received a formal request," he said.
"Italy is in Syria and Lebanon with the UN mission UNIFIL. So an effort on our part already exists in the area, important, significant, and recognised in its relevance," he said.
"This makes any eventual further commitment to be verified and discussed, if and when there is a formal request or proposal to that effect," he said.
