BRUSSELS,  - The European Council's proposed candidate for president of the European Commission, German politician Ursula von der Leyen, said the EU must make the Dublin Regulation "fairer" and coastal countries must not be left alone to manage the migrant issue, "which must be shared by all".

Responding to questions from European Parliament MPs in a hearing before the left-wing GUE party, Von der Leyen said saving lives at sea "is a clear founding value, in any situation that renders it necessary", and highlighted the contribution of the German Navy to rescues at sea.
