EC urges solution for Open Arms and Ocean Viking

Brussels opens informal meetings on governments' willingness

12 August, 16:27

(ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS, AUGUST 12 - A spokesperson for the European Commission (EC) on Monday repeated a position it stated on Friday, in that the EC welcomes the decision by Malta and Italy to allow some migrants from the Open Arms to disembark for health reasons, but that it hasn't started coordinating disembarkation and relocation operations because there hasn't been any request by the countries.

The spokesperson said the EC has contacted the countries to "ask them to show solidarity" because "a solution must be found for all on board" both the Open Arms and the Ocean Viking. Although the countries haven't yet made a formal coordination request, Brussels has begun informal meetings between the governments to understand their willingness and to discuss the type of solution.

The spokesperson said the consultation "will continue within the limits of our mandate".

The EC is also working on a response to a letter from EU Parliament President David Sassoli to EC President Jean-Claude Juncker, and said it should be ready within the week.(ANSAmed).
