BEIRUT - The Arab League has joined international condemnation of statements made by Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu on his plan to annex parts of the West Bank if elected on September 17. The Arab League warned after a special meeting held in Cairo with representatives of its member states that the comments mark a dangerous development and that they threaten the peace process.

Both the Syrian government and Saudi Arabia made public statements after Netanyahu's comments, with Riyadh noting that the Organization for Islamic Conference would be holding a special meeting to discuss the issue and that ''necessary measures'' would be taken.
