EU observers say Tunisian elections 'peaceful, orderly'

Recommend improved rights parity for candidates during campaign

(ANSAmed) - TUNIS, SEPTEMBER 17 - The EU Election Observation Mission (EOM) in Tunisia said presidential elections on September 15 were well-organised and election day took place in a peaceful and orderly atmosphere.

"The Independent High Authority for Elections (ISIE) carried out preparations in an efficient way, despite a reduced calendar due to early presidential elections," said Fabio Massimo Castaldo, head of mission and vice president of the European Parliament, who presented the group's initial conclusions to the press.

Although EOM recognised the independence of the country's judicial system, it said the relevant authorities did not take necessary measures to allow all the candidates to campaign in conformity with the principal of equal opportunity under Tunisian law. (ANSAmed).
