TUNIS - Tunisian President Kais Saied has decided to pardon 2,391 detainees for the ninth anniversary of the revolution of January 14, 2011 when an uprising ousted president Zine El Abidine Ben Alì.

The decision was taken after a meeting with Justice Minister Mohamed Karim Jamoussi. The measure provides for the immediate release of 502 detainees and for a reduction of jail terms of the others. The pardon was examined by a special commission, following the principles of equality, the nature of the crime committed by detainees, the length of the time served in jail and the prisoners' good conduct, officials said.

Detainees who are serving time for serious charges including terrorism and incitement to hatred have not been included in the measure.
