Egypt: ex-president Mubarak dead

He was 91, was foreced to resign in 2011

    (ANSAmed) - ROME, FEBRUARY 25 - Former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak has died. He was 91. Last month, he was hospitalized for surgery and was in the intensive care unit of the military hospital Galaa in Cairo when he died, his brother-in-law , General Mounir Thabet, said. The general said all his family was present when the former president died. The Egyptian presidency will organize his funeral, he added.

    Mubarak was one of the symbols of the authoritarian regime in North africa that led to the beginning of the Arab spring. The uprising in Egypt forced him top step down in 2011 after three decades in power. He was subsequently arrested and jailed on charges of corruption, misappropriation and for cracking down on the protest violently. He was acquitted on most charges and released in 2017. He died after a long illness.
