'Disagree with military actions but dialogue required'

(ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS, JULY 9 - The EU's diplomatic chief Josep Borrell said during a plenary session of the European Parliament Thursday that the Mediterranean required collective efforts and that the long years of conflict in Libya and Syria had had a direct impact on the region and European interests as well as security, as concerns migration and terrorism.

Borrell noted that these conflicts had also had an impact on Turkey, which is active in the conflicts in Syria and Libya and that there had been disagreements between the EU and Turkey but that the two shared interests.

He also noted Turkish solidarity and generosity towards refugees.

Borrell said that Turkey is a key partner of the EU and that the current negative trends in relations between the two should be turned around.

He added that an attitude of retaliation was undermining stability in the Mediterranean region and that thus dialogue was required.

Borrell noted that EU foreign ministers would Monday be looking into what direction to take. (ANSAmed).
