Kosovo: senior Serb official barred entry

Vaccines from Belgrade to Serb population 'destructive policy'

14 January, 12:56

BELGRADE - Authorities in Kosovo banned the director of the Serbian government Office for Kosovo, Petar Petkovic, from entering the country. Petkovic had planned to visit and provide humanitarian aid to Serbians in northern Kosovo who were hit by floods in recent days.

Kosovar Foreign Minister Meliza Haradinaj-Stubla said the ban was due to Belgrade's "destructive policy" against Kosovo. She cited, among other things, the provision of Covid vaccines to the Serbian population in Kosovo through "illegal" channels.

Petkovic said the decision can be framed as part of an electoral campaign now starting in Kosovo, ahead of a vote in the country on February 14. "No one can stop us from helping our people," he said.

At the same time, he said the decision by the Pristina government shows the European Union is unable to guarantee respect for accords reached through EU mediation, including one on freedom of movement.
