The decision was made after a meeting with Tunisian Justice Minister Mohamed Boussetta.

The measure provides for the immediate release of 154 detainees and a reduction in prison time for the others.

The granting of the pardons was evaluated by a special commission that examined a caseload of 2,350 prisoners, following the requisites of the principles of equality, the nature of the crime, the time spent in prison, and good behavior. Criminals convicted of serious crimes were excluded, including those convicted of terrorism and incitement to hate.
