TUNIS - Following the decision of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) to adopt a selection mechanism for nominating top officials of the unified executive authority, which will lead Libya to elections on 24 December 2021, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) announced the start of a one-week period for the submission of candidacies for the positions of a three-member presidency council and of prime minister, closing on 28 January.

UNSMIL also developed and released technical guidance and related forms for the submission of candidacies in accordance with the eligibility criteria adopted by the LPDF in Tunis in mid-November 2020.

UNSMIL said in addition, a verification committee composed of three members of the LPDF will be formed to verify the candidacies submitted in accordance with the relevant requirements and tasked to compile the final lists of candidates for the presidency council for each region and for the post of prime minister.

Following the end of the nomination period, UNSMIL will convene the LPDF in Switzerland for the voting process from 1 to 5 February 2021.

Each of the three regions of the country (Tripolitania, Fazzan, Cyrenaica) will nominate its own representative to the presidency council, which will be made up of three members (one president and two deputies) and will lead the country to elections on 24 December. The members of the LPDF will vote for prime minister, said special representative of the UN secretary-general in Libya Stephanie Williams.

UNSMIL expressed its gratitude and appreciation to the government of Switzerland for having agreed to host the LPDF.
