Draghi in Libya says unique time for rebuilding friendship

Premier says ceasefire essential requirement for relations

06 April, 13:30

(ANSAmed) - ROME, 06 APR - Italian Premier Mario Draghi said in a joint conference in Tripoli with Libyan Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dabaiba that now is a "unique time for Libya", highlighting the national unity government approved by parliament and working towards national reconciliation.

"The time is unique for rebuilding what had been an ancient friendship," Draghi said.

"An essential requirement for moving forward with collaboration is that the ceasefire continues," Draghi said.

"There is the willingness to bring back economic and cultural trade to the level of five to six years ago," he said.

"This was an extraordinarily satisfying meeting. We spoke of cooperation in the fields of infrastructure, energy, health and culture. Italy will increase study grants for Libyan students and the activities of the Italian Cultural Institute," he said.

"We want to make this partnership a guide for the future with full respect for Libyan sovereignty," Draghi said.

For his part, Libyan Prime Minister Dabaiba said one of the most important issues is to "reactivate the 2008 Friendship Treaty, starting with building the highway".

"We foresee an increase in collaboration in electricity and energy," he said. (ANSAmed).
