(ANSA) - TUNIS, 06 APR - European Council President Charles Michel tweeted on Tuesday that his meetings with Tunisian President Kais Saied on the partnership between the EU and Tunisia were "intense and fruitful", and that Tunisia "has chosen democracy and pluralism with respect for individual freedoms" and is a "privileged actor in our southern neighbourhood".

Michel met with Saied on Monday at Carthage Palace.

A statement released by Saied's office said the meeting was a chance to discuss cooperation between the EU and Tunisia and the ways to further develop it, as well as to discuss a series of regional and international topics of reciprocal interest.

Saied "highlighted support by the EU and its Member States for Tunisia's democratic transition, expressing Tunisia's aspiration to strengthen its strategic partnership with the EU, in particular in the sectors of the economy, higher education, youth, and new technologies", it said.

"He also called for a more complete approach to the migratory issue that goes beyond the aspect of security to face the deep causes of this scourge, that is to say, poverty and unemployment". (ANSA).
