DUBAI - The UAE celebrated on Monday the launching of their space probe called 'Al-Amal' ('Hope').

The mission will be the first by an Arab nation to Mars.

After several postponements due to weather conditions, the probe was launched from the Japanese space centre Tanegashima in the southwestern part of the country.

Enthusiasm was clear at the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Center (MBRSC), which led the Mars project for the UAE. Some 450 people worked on the project, over half of whom were UAE citizens.

Al-Amal is expected to be orbiting Mars by February 2021, in time for the 50th anniversary of the unification of the UAE.
