US-Canada-Mexico top contenders

NAPLES - While the national Moroccan soccer team is preparing to debut in the World Cup in Russia against Iran in a match scheduled Friday, Morocco is facing another important challenge on the agenda of the Fifa congress.

The international football federation will decide Wednesday between Morocco and North America as hosts of the 2026 World Cup. Morocco reached the final stage of the selection against top contenders Canada, the US and Mexico which presented a unified candidature.

The North African country is not considered a top contender although it has the support of almost all African countries and the majority of European countries, given its geographical proximity.

Morocco, however, would need to build nine new stadiums and renovate an additional five. Indeed a Fifa report before the country made the final cut said the country's accommodation, transport and stadiums were at risk.

Egyptian daily Al Ahram said Morocco's candidature would attract investments worth 16 billion dollars for the event, the first competition that will see the participation of 48 national teams. Fifa sources believe Morocco stands a chance after running four times unsuccessfully (1994, 1998, 2006 and 2010).

The objective is to become the second African country to host the world cup after South Africa in 2010. (ANSAmed)
