NAPLES - Although Qatar will be hosting the World Cup in 2022 it has already scored a victory in 2019 by becoming the national team that has climbed the highest number of places in the FIFA world ranking.
The annual ranking that is updated each month by the international federation is in fact closing with Qatar in 55th place, up 38 positions compared to the end of 2018.
The climb was reported thanks to an historic year for the national team which won the Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates with seven victories out of seven games and only one goal suffered in the final match against Japan compared to the 19 goals that it scored.
It was an historic success for Qatar which during the year obtained other important results like a 2-2 draw against Paraguay. In qualifying matches for the next World Cup, Qatar obtained this year four victories and a draw, continuing its climb under the guide of Felix Sanchez, who grew up as coach with Barcelona's junior teams and has now become a hero in Qatar.
The country is increasingly becoming a protagonist of global soccer and is currently hosting the FIFA Club World Cup that will wrap up tomorrow with the final match between Liverpool and Brazil's Flamengo.
A meeting was also held in Doha of the committee for the strategic development of FIFA with over 20 delegates of national federations from Asia, Africa and Oceania.
