Champions League semi-finals to resume with empty stands

Spain and Italy ready, Turkey may not host finals

(ANSAmed) - NAPLES, JUNE 5 - European football will resume shortly for the summer but without fans in the stadiums for some nations such as Italy and Spain.

France has instead decided to suspend all football championships amid COVID-19 and assigned its title to the Paris Saint Germain team, though Lyons and Amiens have filed an appeal on which a decision is expected Monday. One of the new elements introduced is the possibility of 5 substitutions to hold matches every three days amid summer heat.

Italy is set to resume matches on June 12 with the final sprint: Juventus and Milan will be squaring off, while Napoli and Inter will be competing the following day for a return to the semi-final and then on June 17 in Rome for the cup itself. On June 20 there will be Torino-Parma and Verona-Cagliari for the championship itself, making up for the 26th day that was left half-completed when the lockdown began and continue for the 12 days until the end. The 'sprint' will end on August 2 with a match that is expected to see Juventus at the top of the rankings, followed by Lazio. Inter will be trying to get back into the fight for the title. In these days, with the plunge in number of infections, there is discussion on bringing fans back into the stadiums. However, for the time being matches will be conducted without anyone in the stands. Spain will see the end of a long sprint between Barcelona and Real Madrid, separated by two points in the rankings led by the former. On June 12, there will be a resumption of the championships.

However, Catalan radio has reported that 5 Barcelona players had been asymptomatic carriers of the virus prior to the resumption of training. The news was neither denied nor confirmed by the team. The Portuguese championship has instead already resumed with Porto losing and Benfica rising in the rankings. European championships are instead expected to resume in late summer. Istanbul is expected to announce soon that it will not be holding the Champion League finals, which is scheduled to be held without fans in the stadium. There may also be a finals with a small tournament between 8 clubs to be played in Lisbon. European trophies will be handed out at the end of August, at the end of the national championships.
