(ANSAmed) - NAPLES, AUGUST 28 - Professional and amateur athletes from around the world will take part in a swim marathon, "The Authentic Marathon Swim", on September 4-6 in the waters around the Greek island of Evia.

The all-new competition takes its inspiration from a historic Greek event 2,500 years ago, the naval Battle of Artimisium, which took place in the year 480 BC.

The winners will receive an olive branch, typical of this area and one of the oldest in existence.

The event received the approval of the Hellenic Swimming Federation and will take place with Covid-19 protocols.

It will begin Saturday, September 5 at 3 pm with a 3-km race in open water, and then a 1.5-km race at 6 pm.

On Sunday, September 6, the 10-km marathon will take place with world-class athletes such as three-time Greek champion Sofia Psilolignou.

Also on Sunday, an 800-metre swim for kids is scheduled.
