(ANSAmed) - MADRID, Feb. 7 - The Catalan government has
postponed the introduction of tourism tax until November, due to
the protests of the tourism industry and the demands of the
Popular Party, with which the regional government led by Artur
Mas (CiU) is negotiating the agreement on the budget estimates
for 2012.

Also at the request of the PP, the Catalan government has identified new categories exempt from the payment of a one-euro prescription charge. To compensate for the loss of income, the government of Artur Mas has imposed a new fee on water supply companies, which will be passed on to users' bills.
Catalonia will be the first region in Spain to introduce the tourism tax, which is required by the Finance Act. The new tax, set at between one and two euros, will cover the entire tourist accommodation sector, from hotels to farm holidays, to camping, and the cruise industry. It will not exceed two euros per person per night in the higher class and luxury hotels and will come to 1.5 euros for three star city hotels, with an exemption for people with disabilities, those over 65 years old or for children younger than five years, and with 50% reductions for young people aged six to 16 years.
