Jordan: European tourists increase by 12% percent

20 November, 10:42

(ANSAmed) - AMMAN, NOVEMBER 20 - The number of European tourists to Jordan increased by 12% during the first ten months of the year, representing a positive performance for the struggling sector, government figures showed on Monday.

A total of 420,000 European tourists arrived in the country after authorities took measures to promote tourism and facilitate visitor entry.

Meanwhile, the number of visitors from the oil-rich Gulf countries also increased by 6% to reach about 500,000 over the same period.

Tourism is considered one of the main sources of foreign currency for the kingdom. However, the sector has been negatively impacted by security and political challenges, with thousands at risk of unemployment.

Earlier this year, the government approved a number of measures to facilitate foreign tourism including reducing visa costs and easing entry requirements.

However, the numbers remain well below the average in the pre-Arab spring period. (ANSAmed).
