TUNIS - The tourism sector in Tunisia continues to grow, with 5.438 million visitors - a 12.8% increase - as of August 10 of this year compared to figures from the same period last year, according to figures released by the Tunisian Tourism Ministry.

The statement released by the ministry said the increase is due mainly to the return of European tourists (up 18.8% as of the end of July), in particular English (up 110.3%), French (up 18%), German (up 6%) and Russians (up 0.9%).

Tourists from the Maghreb are also on the rise, up 12.4% over the same period in 2018, particularly from Libya (up 26.3%) and Algeria (up 15%).

Revenue from tourism is up 44.2%, for a total of 3.16 million Tunisian dinars (one million euros).

Hotel bookings as of the end of July had increased by 13.3%.

Tunisian Tourism Minister René Trabelsi said the goal is to reach nine million visitors by the end of the year.
