ROME - The United Arab Emirates (UAE) saw an increase in cruise bookings of 124% in 2019, compared to 2018, according to the Ticketcrociere Observatory.

It said interest has grown for destinations such as Abu Dhabi, the capital of UAE, and Doha, the capital of Qatar, while previously only the city of Dubai was synonymous with the Gulf.

Thanks to the increase in ships positioned in the Emirates during autumn and winter, according to Ticketcrociere data, the port of Dubai this year will see a 135% increase in bookings compared to 2018, and Abu Dhabi will have a 49% increase.

Qatar will host the next World Cup in 2022 and for the occasion Doha is building an underground stadium called Wall Stadium.

"The numbers of cruises continue to grow and there are many destinations this year have the plus sign in front of them.

There are South and North America, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, but nothing has grown like the Emirates," said Nicola Lorusso, CEO of Ticketcrociere, the Italian brand of Taoticket S.r.l., an online travel agency specialised in the cruise sector.
