(ANSAmed) - TEL AVIV, FEBRUARY 18 - The Israeli National Commission for Infrastructure on Monday approved the extension of the Tel Aviv-Jerusalem rail line with a new underground stretch running to the Western Wall.

Israeli daily Israel Hayom said the new station will be named after US President Donald Trump, in a gesture of recognition for his transferring the US Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.

The station will be 50 metres underground and will be connected by escalators to the esplanade of the Western Wall.

"It is a very exciting time for Israel and for the generations to come," said Israeli Transport Minister Bezalel Smotrich.

"We are realising Zionism," he said. However, the project is drawing objections from Israeli environmentalists, who had already criticised the construction of a cable car to Mount Zion, beyond the walls of the Old City.

The foreign minister of Jordan said Israel has no right to build train stations under Jerusalem's Old City, and said the project is "in flagrant violation of international law".(ANSAmed).
