IRAQ: ATTACK; SYRIAN PRESS POINTS FINGER AT ISRAEL
(ANSAmed) - DAMASCUS, OCTOBER 26 - According to the
government-backed Syrian press, it was the Israeli secret
service, and more specifically Mossad, who were behind the
double terrorist attacks committed in Baghdad yesterday which
cost the lives of more than 150 people. In its editorial today,
the daily Tishrin wrote that "beyond the pain and the grief,
Iraqis now have to think carefully about the role of Mossad
collaborators" who it claims are working for "the Zionist
project of splitting up Iraq along ethnic, sectarian and tribal
lines".
Already after the bloody attack of August 19 which caused
hundreds of deaths in Baghdad, the Iraqi government pointed at
Syriàs involvement in the spiral of terror, even calling on the
UN to intervene by creating a special international tribunal.
Damascus rebuffed all accusations and condemned the crime,
expressing its "firm position against any form of terrorism"
in a communiqué from its Foreign Ministry.
"Those who profit from these actions are not Arabs or
Moslems," Tishrin ends its piece this morning, "but those who
support the Zionist project of a weak and fragmented Iraq,
sidelined and destroyed, no longer a united Arab-Islamic
state". (ANSAmed).
