MIDEAST: GOLAN OCCUPATION AN OBSTACLE TO PEACE, FRATTINI
Israel's occupation of Syriàs Golan Heights represents "one
of the main obstacles to peace in the Middle East," Italian
Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said here today. Speaking at a
joint press conference with his Syrian counterpart Walid
al-Moallem, Frattini expressed his hope that indirect
negotiations between Israel and Syria would resume based on the
return of Golan to Syria.

EARTHQUAKE: 250 DEAD, 11 STILL MISSING IN ABRUZZO
The official death toll from Monday's devastating earthquake
in Italy's central Abruzzo region has risen to 250, with 11
people still unaccounted for, the minister for Relations with
Parliament, Elio Vito, told the Senate this morning. Of the 250
dead, 17 have yet to be identified, he added.

administration "openly supported" Algerian President and
