ENERGY: JORDAN SIGNS NUCLEAR ACCORD WITH BRITAIN, CANADA
(ANSAmed) - AMMAN, JUNE 30 - Jordan has signed two
memorandums of understanding with Canada and Britain to provide
the kingdom with technology and know how on its peaceful nuclear
programme, an official said today.
The latest accord was signed yesterday between Jordan and
Britain in Amman, on hope of reaching a comprehensive agreement
before year end, said Jordan Nuclear Energy Commission (JNEC)
President Khalid Touqan.
Britain would provide the kingdom with needed technology and
train its staff on maintaining a reliable source of nuclear fuel
for the future nuclear reactors, said Touqan. The agreement also
tackles nuclear safety, power generation and desalinating water
using nuclear energy. A similar agreement was signed with Canada
on Saturday.
The desert kingdom has so far signed three agreements in this
field with France, Britain and Canada in a bid encouraged
nuclear advanced nations provide the kingdom with all help in
getting its nuclear reactor up and running.
The interested countries agreed they will explore, exploit
and mine Jordan's rich underground reserves of nuclear minerals
such uranium in exchange for providing the cash-strapped country
with an operational nuclear programme.
A peaceful nuclear programme has become an urgent necessity
to the kingdom in light of the sky-high prices of fuel. The
kingdom has no oil and relies on import from the oil rich Gulf
states. The recent increased added pressure on the state budget
and drove prices of commodities high. (ANSAmed).
