JORDAN: JOB FAIR TO HIRE UNEMPLOYED LOCALS
(ANSAmed) - AMMAN, JUNE 25 - Jordan ministry of Labour
launched a job fair in Amman on hope of securing badly needed
jobs for thousands of young unemployed Jordanians, an official
said today.
The event, Jordan Job Fair and Training Expo 2008, attracted
at least 110 companies from financial, services, tourism,
education and other sectors and is being co-sponsored between
Jordan's government and American aid agency (USAID). Organizers
hope at least 15,000 jobless Jordanians will leave the fair with
work contract.
"This gathering is a good chance for employers and job
seekers to meet directly and get better acquainted with the
demands of the local labour sector," said minister of Labour
Bassem Salem.
Jordan, like many oil deprived countries in the region, have
taken a full blunt of the increase in fuel prices, leading many
industries collapse under strong competition from foreign
products that cost less, or provide better quality. The economic
slow down lead many lose their jobs, in a country that already
suffers from chronic unemployment that ranges between 14 percent
to 15, according to official estimates. Independent institutions
placed jobless at 27 per cent. "We aim to turn this into an
annual event in order to combat unemployment and improve
Jordanians' standards of living as envisioned by His Majesty the
King," said the minister. (ANSAmed).
