JORDAN: PREPARATION FOR THE LAUNCH OF 3G SERVICES UNDER WAY
(ANSAnmed) - AMMAN, JUNE 26 - The third generation services
3G will be introduced in the near future as officials from the
Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) said today they
are working on preparing technical infrastructure for this
service.
Companies interested in providing the service will have
access to radio frequencies in the 2GHz band for delivering 3G,
TRC CEO Ahmad Hiasat said, noting that the government has taken
a serious stride to put the final touches to launch the
services.
In addition, the government plans to engage interested
parties in dialogue to pave the ground for efficient application
to the long awaited product.
Mobile sector in Jordan witnessed a steady growth after the
market was liberalized nearly ten years ago, with four providers
controlling the market of 5.4 million population. Official
records show the number of subscribers is 4.8 million, including
an army of foreign expatriates including half a million Iraqi
asylum seekers and half a million expatriates.
Officials in Amman say their strategy is built upon the
results of comprehensive studies performed by Eurostrategies,
the Brussels-based European consultancy that provides technical
assistance to the TRC through the "Support to Regulatory Reform
and Privatisation" Programme sponsored by the Delegation of the
European Commission to Jordan. (Ansamed)
