ENVIRONMENT: FORESTS ON FIRE IN CALABRIA AND ABRUZZO
(ANSAmed) - ROME, SEPTEMBER 12 - Since this morning Canadair
aircraft and helicopters have been operating in Calabria to
extinguish the numerous fires affecting the region. Special
situations are registered in the province of Reggio Calabria,
although the aircraft are operating also in the Cosenza and
Catanzaro areas, where blazes have been reported since
yesterday.
In the province of Reggio Calabria, the state forestry corps
are trying to tame the flames which broke out near Santuario di
Polsi, in San Luca. Since this morning a helicopter has been
operating and the idea to send a Canadair to intervene in
support is being evaluated. There are also problems near the
railway line of Ricadi, where a helicopter was sent. Even though
the fire is far from the rails, during the aircraft's
intervention the railway electric line will have to be
disconnected. This, however, should not bring about consequences
for the circulation as, in the time interval in which the
intervention is planned to take place, no passage of trains is
scheduled.
In Abruzzo, a vast fire destroyed during the night more than
two hectares of wood and undergrowth in Cupellòs Strane
quarter. The alarm was launched at 9pm local time. Firefighting
units from Vasto, Lanciano and Gissi, assisted by the men of the
forestry corps and Carabinieri, confronted, for some six hours a
wide fire front, characterised by very tall flames, which was
threatening to reach some dwellings in the area. Investigation
is underway to establish the causes of the fire, which was tamed
around 0300 local time in the morning. (ANSAmed).
