IMMIGRATION: IMPRISONMENT FOR ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS, BILL
(ANSAmed) - ALGIERS, SEPTEMBER 1 - The Algerian Government
has adopted a bill which, if approved by the parliament, will
make illegal immigration a crime.
According to a statement of the government reported by news
agency APS, "the bill envisages up to ten years of imprisonment
for the 'passeurs' and up to six months for those who try to
leave illegally the Algerian territory".
Algeria is a country of origin, transit and destination of
the illegal immigration. While hundreds of young Algerians try
to reach Europe going mainly to Spain and Italy, thousands of
immigrants coming from different African states enter the
southern borders of the Maghreb country. Many of them, waiting
to continue their trip of hope to the northern Mediterranean
coast, remain blocked for years in Algeria. (ANSAmed).
