SPAIN: NEW SURVEILLANCE TOWER AT CEUTA BORDER
(ANSAmed) - MADRID, JUNE 11 - The Spanish Civil Guard
launched the construction of a new surveillance tower at the
northern border which separates the Spanish enclave of Ceuta
from Morocco.
The objective of the structure is to boost the control over
illegal entrance of immigrants in Spanish territory by sea,
according to sources from the security body, cited by the media.
The tower, which is being built near the frontier in Benzu,
will be the highest observation tower for control over the small
vessels which transport illegal immigrants from Morocco and
whoever approaches the town swimming. The tower, which will host
a fixed surveillance post, is the latest of the measures decided
by the Spanish Government in order to strengthen its borders in
view of the massive arrival of Sub-Saharan immigrants.
In 2005, after some incidents at the barriers of the borders
with Ceuta and Melilla, which ended with a tragic balance of
half a dozen dead, the perimeter of the metal protection was
strengthened and doubled to six metres of height with barbed
wire and photoelectric cells, which goes along the borders with
the two Spanish enclaves in Morocco. (ANSAmed).
