GAZA: OFFENSIVE EXTENDS, ROCKETS LAUNCHED CLOSE TO TEL AVIV
(ANSAmed) - TEL AVIV/GAZA, JANUARY 6 - The Israeli troops
continue to advance in the Gaza Strip and this morning the tanks
moved into Khan Younis, in southern Gaza, the largest city south
of the Strip. From his part, for the first time Hamas has used
more long-range rockets than before and some of them hit the
city of Ghedera, 45 km North-East of the Strip and just 40km
from Tel Aviv. Some rockets also hit Ashdod, Yavne and beer
Sheva. Clashes also occur in the refugee camp of Jabaliya, North
of Gaza City, where the army has probably killed a military head
of Hamas.
And while French President Nicolas Sarkozy arrived in
Damascus and asked Syria to exert pressure on Hamas in order to
stop using the arms, the air raids and bombings from the sea
continued. In Deir el-Balah, in particolar, according to
Palestinian medical sources, the naval artillery has caused at
least 10 dead, but the news was not confirmed by Israel yet.
Yesterday evening three Israeli soldiers were killed and other
24 were injured by an Israeli tank shell fired in error during
fighting in the Gaza Strip.
On the Palestinian front, according to Palestinian agency
Maan, 19 died today during clashes between militants and the
army. According to a spokesperson of the army, since the
conflict has began in the Gaza Strip at least 130 combatants of
Hamas have been killed. Palestinian sources say that 575
Palestinians were killed and more than 2,000 injured since the
beginning of the offensive which began on December 27 with air
