LEBANON: EU FUNDS PROJECTS AIMING AT PREVENTING TORTURE
(ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS, JUNE 26 - The European Commission is
funding three projects in Lebanon in the framework of the
European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights for a total
of almost EUR 1 million. These projects aim at preventing
torture and assisting victims of torture, the Delegation
announced at a press conference commemorating the International
Day in Support of Victims of Torture.
Over the last 5 years, an average of EUR 12 million per year
has been allocated by the European Commission to fund projects
submitted by civil society organisations around the world.
Activities include support and rehabilitation of victims of
torture, awareness-raising on the Optional Protocol to the
Convention against Torture (OPCAT) and the development of
torture prevention and monitoring networks.
Lebanon is bound by stringent international commitments in
the field of torture and ill treatment, including in the context
of the European Neighbourhood Policy. In April 2007, moreover,
Lebanon firmed up the commitment on torture when it undertook to
ratify the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture
as soon as possible.
The three projects involved: L'Association Libanaise pour
l'Education et la Formation (ALEF), Khiam Rehabilitation Centre
for Victims of Torture and Restart Centre for Rehabilitation of
Victims of Violence and Torture.(ANSAmed).
