PROCREATION: EMIRATES VOTE TO BAN STORAGE OF FROZEN EMBRYOS
(ANSAmed) - ABU DHABI, JUNE 18 - The Federal National Council
(FNC) voted to ban the storage of frozen human embryos, a move
that doctors fear could also prevent them from using previously
stored embryos to help childless couples become parents. The
vote, which prompted a heated discussion in the council chamber
yesterday, goes against the recommendations of the FNC health,
labour and social affairs committee, which had recommended new
laws be drafted to govern the legal storage of such embryos.
Doctors said last night they were unsure what the law meant
for more than 10,000 frozen embryos that have been stored in
fertility clinics throughout the UAE since 1995. The council
decision follows the issuance of fatwas by some muftis who said
the storage of embryos was contrary to Islamic law. The most
immediate concern, opponents said, was of the risks of mixing a
family's lineage. Champions of storing embryos say such
preservation reduces women's exposure to more invasive and
stressful fertility treatments.
During the debate in the council's chamber, Humaid Mohamed al
Qutami, the Health Minister, read aloud two fatwas issued in
2006 by the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department and by the Department
of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities in Dubai.
