EGYPT-SPAIN: PROJECT FOR NEW TUNNEL UNDER SUEZ CANAL

(ANSAmed) - CAIRO - The Spanish government will
collaborate with the Egyptian government on two feasibility
plans: one for the second tunnel under the Suez Canal, which
will be added to the existing tunnel and a bridge for road
transport between the two shores, and one project for a high
speed railway line connecting the Red Sea and the south of the
country ending in Luxor. So announced Spanish Premier Zapatero,
after a meeting with Egyptian Prime Minister, Ahmed Nazif, also
including various ministers from both governments. The two
projects are part of a current collaboration between Spain and
Egypt, which includes transport, infrastructure, energy,
agriculture, food safety, and tourism. The new tunnel under the
Suez Canal is part of the government's urbanisation plan in the
Sinai Peninsula, starting from the east with Port Said. The high
speed railway line will contribute to the development of the
tourism industry for Upper Egypt's archaeological sites. The
focus of the encounter whose participants also included Foreign
Ministers, Abul Gheit and Moratinos, was also cooperation
between businesses from both countries as well as clean energy.
Trade volume between the two countries, according to Mena, was
2.5 billion euros in 2008, and Egyptian exports totalled about
900 million euros, mainly due to natural gas. After the meeting
with Nazif, the Spanish Premier had an official lunch with
President Hosni Mubarak, and met with Arab League Secretary, Amr
Moussa. (ANSAmed).
