Paralympic handbike champ Alex
Zanardi on Monday had his third operation after suffering
critical head injuries in a crash near Siena last month.
The five-hour op was aimed at "the cranio-facial reconstruction
and the stabilization of the areas affected by the trauma
suffered in the June 19 accident," hospital sources said.
Sources said Zanardi's condition "remains stable from the
cardio-respiratory and metabolic standpoint, and serious from
the neurological standpoint".
Facial surgery chief Paolo Gennaro said "the fractures were
complex" but they were "of a type we have to deal with
routinely".
