Coronavirus: 588,000+ cases in New Europe, 20,401 died

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 30 JUL - A total of 588.252 confirmed cases of COVID-19 (+5761 day-on-day) were registered since the beginning of the pandemic in countries in Central- and Eastern Europe, Germany, Austria and Greece, show official data of national authorities collected by the World Health Organization (WHO) by July 29. In the past week, the growth of COVID-19 cases in the region was particularly strong in the Western Balkans, Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania and Ukraine, according to data updated as of July 27. Belarus, Moldova, North Macedonia, Montenegro and Kosovo are now registering more confirmed total cases of Covid-19 per million people than Italy. The total number of fatalities in the region is 20401 (+114), of which 9128 registered in Germany, 2239 in Romania, 1682 in Poland, 1650 in Ukraine 757 in Moldova, 713 in Austria, 596 in Hungary, 551 in Serbia, 548 in Belarus. The highest number of cases of COVID-19 in the area was registered in Germany (206926, +684 in the last 24 hours), followed by Ukraine (67597, +1022), Belarus (67518, +152), Romania (47053, +1151), Poland (43904, +502), Serbia (24520, +379), Moldova (23521, +367), Austria (20682, +132), and Czechia (15799, +283). In Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania and in the Western Balkans (Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Albania) 126072 confirmed cases and 4543 deaths were registered as of July 29. In Central- and Eastern Europe, Belarus has registered about 7113 cases of COVID-19 per million inhabitants, followed by Moldova (5831), North Macedonia (4966), Montenegro (4651) and Kosovo (4204), compared to 4076 in Italy, while the lowest rate was observed in Slovakia (404 per million) and Greece (397 per million), according to a count by ANSA based on WHO data. In the region, North Macedonia has registered the highest number of deaths per one million population (227), followed by Moldova (188), Romania (115) and Germany (110), Slovakia the lowest (5). Italy has recorded around 581 deaths per million inhabitants. Between July 20 and July 27, the highest weekly increase of total confirmed cases was observed in Montenegro (+61,0%), Kosovo (+24,6%), Bosnia-Herzegovina (+22,2%), Romania (+19,6%) and Bulgaria (+19,4%). Only in Austria, Greece, Lithuania, Hungary, Latvia, Germany, Belarus and Estonia the weekly increase of new cases was below 5%.
