Coronavirus: 490.000+ cases in New Europe, 18.292 died

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 09 JUL - A total of 490.119 confirmed cases of COVID-19 (+3784 day-on-day), were registered in countries in Central- and Eastern Europe, Germany, Austria and Greece, show official data of national authorities received by the World Health Organization (WHO) by July 8. The growth of COVID-19 cases in the region was particularly strong in Montenegro, Kosovo, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Albania, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Croatia and Ukraine in the past week, according to data updated as of July 6. Belarus and Moldova are now registering more confirmed cases of Covid-19 per million people than Italy.

The total number of fatalities in the region is 18.292 (+132), out of which 9036 registered in Germany, 1799 in Romania, 1528 in Poland, 1307 in Ukraine 706 in Austria, 604 in Moldova, 589 in Hungary, 436 in Belarus 351 in Czechia, 351 in North Macedonia, 330 in Serbia. Between June 29 and July 6, the highest growth of the total number of COVID19-related fatalities was recorded in Kosovo (+150,0%), Albania (+79,5%), Montenegro (+55,6%) and North Macedonia (+43,3%).

The highest number of cases of COVID-19 in the area was registered in Germany (197341, +397 in the last 24 hours), followed by Belarus (64003, +199), Ukraine (50414, +807), Poland (36412, +257), Romania (29620, +397), Austria (18415, +89), Moldova (18141, +235), Serbia (16719, +299) and Czechia (12685, +119). In Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania and in the Western Balkans (Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Albania) 78169 confirmed cases and 3336 deaths were registered as of July 8.

In Central- and Eastern Europe, Belarus has registered about 6743 cases of COVID-19 per million inhabitants, followed by Moldova (4497) and North Macedonia (3487), compared to 4001 in Italy, while the lowest rate was observed in Greece (333 per million) and Slovakia (324 per million), according to a count by ANSA based on WHO data. In the region, North Macedonia has registered the highest number of deaths per one million population in the region (169), followed by Moldova (150) and Germany (109), Slovakia the lowest (5). Italy has recorded around 577 deaths per million inhabitants.

Between June 29 and July 6, the highest weekly increase of total confirmed cases was observed in Montenegro (+115,7%), Kosovo (+63,0%), Bosnia-Herzegovina (+57,2%), Albania (+48,6%), Bulgaria (+47,0%), North Macedonia (+38,0%), Croatia (+36,0%) and Ukraine (+31,7%). Only in Germany, Lithuania, Hungary, Latvia and Estonia the weekly increase of new cases was between 5% and zero. (ANSA).
