(ANSA) - BERLIN, 16 SET - At the beginning of August, the German government promised the US public funding of around 1 billion euros to waiver the potential sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. Die Zeit reported, anticipating tomorrow's edition. According to the German weekly newspaper, Finance Minister Olaf Scholz had promised - first verbally and later in writing - to his counterpart Steven Mnuchin funding of up to one billion euros to construct two ports to import US liquid gas.

Through the terminals of Brunsbuettel and Wilhelmshaven, Zeit reported, American companies want to transport gas to Germany.

In a written message dating back to August 7, the German government made itself available to raise the "public support for the construction" of the ports up to 1 billion, to avoid the sanctions threatened by Donald Trump, who wants to sell the US gas in Europe. Meanwhile, the Nord Stream 2 is currently back in the spotlight. After Russian dissident Alexei Navalny's poisoning with a nerve agent from Novichok in Russia, Angela Merkel has not yet ruled out the project's interruption to bring gas from Russia to Germany and Europe: an issue that will be on the table at the next European council.
